Abdul Latiff Mohidin (Malaysian, 1941-). An oil on panel titled "Tumbuhan", Kuala Lumpur, 1964. Initiated lower right and dated 64. Gallery tag verso. Provenance: From a Chester County, PA private collection. Catalog note: Latiff Mohidin developed his celebrated "Pago-Pago" series during the mid-to-late 1960s, drawing upon the natural landscape, architecture, and cultural traditions of Southeast Asia. Mohidin coined the term Pago-Pago from an amalgamation of "pagoda" and "pagar", the latter referring to wooden structural elements found in traditional Malay houses. Through the series, Mohidin sought not simply to reproduce traditional motifs, but to develop a modern visual language rooted in the forms and cultural identity of his native region. The Pago-Pago series is regarded as a defining body of work within Mohidin's career and an important contribution to the development of modern Southeast Asian art. Panel: 36in x 23-3/4in.
